HP vs Berkner: KICKOFF TONIGHT (THURSDAY) AT 7PM

Kirk Dooley’s Blog
berkner-rams-helmet2  It seemed like it rained for 40 days and 40 nights before and during last week’s 34-14 win over the Mesquite Skeeters. Only the heartiest of Highland Park fans showed up to watch the two teams battle during a thunderstorm. But that scene wasn’t just at Highlander Stadium. All high school games in the Dallas area had heavy rain, lightning delays and waterlogged fans.
   It was a mess.
So earlier this week when the weather forecasters predicted the same thing would happen again this Friday, area coaches, players, cheerleaders, band members, drill teams, parents, fans and bus drivers all hoped and prayed for a dry game. That’s when Scots head coach Randy Allen looked up to the sky, raised his hands toward the heavens and parted the sea.
Well, actually he didn’t part the sea. He changed the day of the game to avoid the dangerous weather.
Changing the date of a high school football game four days before kickoff is like parallel parking a battleship. Coach Allen lit up the phone lines and found that most other head coaches agreed to move the kickoffs toThursday at 7:00. Once that was agreed upon, there were JV games and freshman games that had to be moved.
The Highlander Band needed to be on board, which they were since it meant they could actually attend the game and march on a dry field. The cheerleaders, Highland Belles, football parents and others had to agree to the move. The HP football team’s Caniac fundraising dinner was moved to Friday night, Nov. 14.
The deadline for Scots Illustrated was moved up a day, which threw my household into a frenzy. Jim Castellaw had to postpone four mortgage loans on Thursday so he could handle his Scots football radio duties. Lt. John Ball of the University Park Police Department had to cancel his romantic Thursday dinner at Krispy Kreme in order to work the game.
Now that everyone seems to be on board over the date change – and it was a brilliant decision – watch as half the fans show up at 7:30 for a game that begins at 7:00.
Last Friday the Lufkin football team members were trapped on their yellow dog school buses for six hours in the rain and heavy traffic until they arrived for their district game against Ennis. After two and a half hours of lightning delays, the exasperated coaches realized that they would have to postpone the game to Saturday. That meant that the Lufkin team would turn around and drive back home for six hours in heavy rain Friday night, then do the same thing Saturday. Would 24 hours on a bus over a 48-hour period be fair? No. The exasperated coaches decided to simply flip a coin to pick the winner. The Lufkin coach won the toss and his team defeated Ennis, 2-0, without ever taking the field.
Oh, by the way, the Scots host the Berkner Rams Thursday at 7:00 p.m. It will be Seniors Night. You can thank Coach Allen for the nice weather.
